PURPOSE:To industrially and advantageously obtain the titled compound useful as an additive for coarse pore inhibitors, etc., of cement, etc., by reacting silicon with a lower alkyl alcohol in the presence of a polyether compound using an alkali metal alkoxide catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Silicon is reacted with a lower alkyl alcohol, preferably methanol in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide catalyst. In the process, the above-mentioned reaction is carried out in the presence of a polyether compound, preferably expressed by formula I or II (R<1> and R<2> are lower alkyl, phenyl, etc.; n is an integer 1-8; X is alkylene, etc.; m is an integer 2-20), e.g. diethylene glycol dimethyl ether, etc., to afford the aimed compound.
