The cover (3) closing the furnace is passed through by a waste gas pipe piece, the outlet cross-section of which can be controlled via an adjustable flap (6) arranged above the cover (3), and by further inlets (X). These further inlets are directed onto the scrap introduced and, via a pipeline (7), connected to the waste gas pipe piece in its section lying between the cover and the flap (6) in order to blow the majority of the hot waste gas onto the scrap introduced. <IMAGE>
