PURPOSE:To hold the position of an encoder device even when an unexpected situation, such as power failure, etc., occurs, by providing a counter which detects the graduation of the scale of a base plate equipped with the incremental type graduation and counts and stores the output signals. CONSTITUTION:A counter 8 which is actuated by a battery 9 interlocked with a detector 7 is installed to a rotary type or linear type encoder itself which is provided with a base plate 1 equipped with an incremental type graduation and the detector 7 which detects the graduation of the scale of the base plate 1. Therefore, even when an expected situation, such as power failure, etc., occurs, the position of the encoder can be stored in the counter 8 which is actuated by the battery 9 and the position can be used again as a position signal. Moreover, by installing an arithmetic circuit to the counter 8, the position, angle, or speed is calculated from a detected graduation and a signal is transmitted and displayed.
