PURPOSE:To form the titled lightweight cantilever for a pickup having excellent strength and rigidity and having a flat response characteristic by forming a plating, wherein acicular crystal bodies of silicon carbide whiskers, silicon nitride whiskers, boron whiskers, etc., are dispersed and deposited, on the surface of a cantilever substrate formed with a light alloy. CONSTITUTION:The cantilever substrate 1 is molded in the form of a tapered pipe or a doble cantilever with aluminum alone, an aluminum alloy, or a light metal such as titanium. A plated layer 2 is formed on the surface of the substrate. Silicon carbide whiskers, silicon nitride whiskers, and boron whiskers are uniformly dispersed and deposited in the plated layer 2. The plated layer 2 is formed with a matrix material 2a consisting of a binary alloy of Ni-P, etc., contg., for example, 90-92wt% Ni and 8-10wt% P and silicon carbide whiskers 2b which are uniformly dispersed in the matrix material 2a, for example, by 20wt% and deposited.
