PURPOSE:The reaction of a phenol with cupric chloride readily and selectively gives the titled compound which is used as a synthetic intermediate of carbamates, as agricultural chemicals, in high yield. CONSTITUTION:A phenol of formula I (R<1> is H, alkyl; R<2> is tertiary alkyl), e.g., 3-t-butylphenol or 2,5-di-t-butylphenol is allowed to react with cupric chloride, preferably in a solvent such as acetic acid or dimethylformamide at 60-150 deg.C, preferably at about 100 deg.C, to give a compound of formula II. The amount of the cupric chloride used in the reaction is 1.5-2.5 equivalents, preferably 2.0-2.2 equivalents based on the phenol. In the case where the cupric salt is regenerated from the cuprous salt with oxygen and hydrogen chloride, the amount need not be stoichiometric to the phenol.
