<p>An apparatus for use with a lathe to support a workpiece (28) away from the driven lathe chuck (289) comprises a yoke (35) for attachment to the lathe bed (16) and having an opening for receiving a rotating assembly (36) including a plurality of radially adjustable jaw members (40-43) arranged to be clamped onto the outer surface of an elongate workpiece (28). Bearing means (52, 53) couple the rotating assembly (36) to the yoke (35) and these are located in a lubrication compartment (35c). A cooling fluid passage (62) is also located in the yoke (35) to enable a flow of cooling fluid to cool the yoke and hence the bearing (32, 53). The lubrication and cooling of the bearings (52, 53) permit high speeds of rotation of the workpiece (28) during machining.</p> |
