摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain a display element of a scanning type which has a high erasing speed, consumes less electric power and has a high contract ratio by using a substrate consisting of light transmittable ceramics having an electrooptic effect as a display medium, providing a network-like electrode on one main surface and providing a transparent photoconductive electrode on said main surface, then providing transparent electrodes over the entire surface of both the main surfaces. CONSTITUTION:A red light source 10 is kept lighted up at all times. The resistance in the part irradiated with an argon laser 8 is considerably decreased when said laser is irradiated through an analyzer 7, a transparent electrode 5, and a PLZT substrate 1 to a photoconductive film 5. An electric field is then generated between the part on the substrate 1 where the potential is increased by the voltage impressed to the transparent electrode 3 and the network-like electrode 2. Double refractions by a Kerr effect are thereby generated. Then the polarizing state of the light changes and the light is shielded by a polarizer 6 and the analyzer 7. To erase, the transparent electrode 3 provided on the film 4 is made OV and blue light is irradiated over the entire surface form a blue light source. The resistance of the film 4 is then decreased and the original state is restored.
