PURPOSE:To obtain a cyclic polyacrylonitrile structure useful in the production of carbon fiber inexpensively, by treating an acrylonitrile polymer with an aqueous solution containing cuprous ions. CONSTITUTION:A cyclic polyacrylonitrile structure is produced by treating an acrylonitrile polymer with an aqueous solution containing cuprous ions. According to this process, polyacrylonitrile as a starting material can be converted into a cyclic polyacrylonitrile structure without being blackened by the catalytic action of cuprous ions. It is necessary that the cuprous chloride concentration in a catalyst bath is 0.2% or above, but it is not necessary that it is 2% or above. When the concentration in the catalyst bath is below 0.2%, the aim can not be achieved because of an extremely low catalytic action of cuprous ions on polyacrylonitrile. When it is above 2%, the effect can no longer be increased, so that a further increase in the amount of addition is meaningless. |
