PURPOSE:To obtain a stable methoxide solution of a metallic element in the yttrium or lanthanum series, by dissolving a chloride of the above-mentioned metallic element in methyl alcohol and further adding mono- - triethanolamine to carry out methoxide-forming reaction. CONSTITUTION:A chloride of a metallic element in the yttrium or lanthanum series is dissolved in methyl alcohol and one or more amines selected from mono- - triethanolamines, preferably at 1:0.5-1:4, particularly 1:1-1:3 molar ratio of the above-mentioned chloride to the amine are further added to carry out methoxide-forming reaction and afford the aimed stable methoxide solution of the above-mentioned metallic element useful as a material in the fields of glass manufacturing, e.g. porous glass or hollow glass, etc., ceramics, etc. The solution is further treated with an ion exchange resin to give the above- mentioned methoxide solution of high purity by simple operation without using physical treatment.
