PURPOSE:To produce hydroxyapatite in high yield in a short time, by adding ammonia water and/or an amine to a specific solvent solution of an inorganic Ca compound and an organic P compound and spraying the mixture into a flame to effect thermal decomposition reaction. CONSTITUTION:A solution is prepared by using an organic solvent (e.g. methanol) compatible with water or a mixture of the solvent and water as a solvent and dissolving an inorganic Ca compound [e.g. Ca(NO3)2.4H2O] and an organic P compound [e.g. (CH3O)3P] soluble in said solvent. The molar ratio of Ca/P in the solution is 1.45-1.85. The solution is added with ammonia water and/or a soluble amine (e.g. trimethylamine) to obtain a stock solution. The stock solution is sprayed into a flame or a hot zone heated at 700-1,500 deg.C and the hydroxyapatite powder produced by thermal decomposition reaction is optionally heat-treated.
