PURPOSE:To reduce the size of hardware and to shorten an arithmetic processing time of software by setting up four picture elements of an original image surrounding the picture elements of a noticed conversion image to A-D, calculating logical values in respective noticed picture elements in accordance with four tables previously determined on the basis of specific conditions and using ORs of the calculated logical values as binary information. CONSTITUTION:The coordinate value rj of a converted picture element R in the direction (j) is calculated and the coordinate value rj is compared with a previously set value 2-1/alphaj to calculate the coordinate value ri of the converted picture element R in the direction (i). Then binary information Ia-Id of the four adjacent picture elements are entered and the coordinate value ri is compared with the previously set value 2-1/alphai. The OR of the binary information values of the original picture element previously prepared on a route corresponding to the compared result is determined as binary information Ir. Said steps are repeated in the direction (i) and then in the direction (j) to obtain converted picture element information. Consequently, four combinations of conditions for the value Ir of the converted picture element R are formed, so that the conditions can be discriminated by repeating comparison/ decision twice.
