PURPOSE:To provide a magnetic recording medium having a good over-write characteristic, high recording density and output and god magnetic characteristics and running durability by having a magnetic layer contg. planar magnetic powder and binder and having a specific film thickness or below on a base and specifying the squareness ratio in the perpendicular direction and the coercive force in the perpendicular direction of the medium. CONSTITUTION:This magnetic recording medium has the magnetic layer contg. the planar magnetic powder having <=0.2mum average grain size and 2-6 average planar ratio and the binder and having <=1.8mum, more preferably 0.4-1.4mum film thickness. The value of the squareness ratio in the perpendicular direction of the medium, designated as y, and the value of the coercive force in the perpendicular direction thereof, designated as x(Oe), are y<=-0.001x+1.5, 450<=x<750, and 0.75<y, and are more preferably y<=-0.001+1.5, 500<=x<=700, 0.75<y. The over-write characteristic is thereby satisfied and the magnetic recording characteristic and running durability are improved.
