1305898 Plugging tubeless tyre punctures DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd 24 Feb 1970 [26 Feb 1969] 10312/69 Heading B7C A puncture in a tubeless pneumatic tyre is repaired by a tool comprising a longitudinally curved shank 1 with a hook 4 at one rounded end 3 and a handle 2 at the other end, the shank 1 being inserted through the puncture, across the interior of the tyre to extend beyond the space between the tyre beads 10, 11, and a repair plug 12 with an integral patch 13 being engaged in the hook and coated with a liquid material which assists adhesion of the plug and patch when they become respectively secured in the puncture and against the inner liner of the tyre around the puncture after the tool is withdrawn through the puncture. The tool shank is curved over the central portion 1b of its length and straight over the portions 1a, 1c adjacent its ends so that the angle X between the ends is 27Œ6 degrees while a groove 7 is provided to retain liquid material when, in use the shank its dipped therein and passed through the puncture to coat it with the liquid. The shank 1 is sufficiently long to abut the bead 11 to facilitate it being held steady while the plug is engaged in the hook. The plug 12 comprises a vulcanized rubber with an excess of vulcanizing agent, while the patch 13 has a layer 14 of uncured rubber having no vulcanizing agent. The liquid material may comprise an adhesive and/or an accelerator, e.g. dithiocarbonates, so that when the liquid material is applied to the plug and patch and the latter are in position in the tyre, migration of the vulcanizing agent into the uncured layer occurs to effect a cold cure. |
