PURPOSE:In the reaction between 2,6-xylenol and a sulfonating agent, the by- products are recovered as a solution of 2,6-xylenol and reused to produce the titled compound of no discoloration readily in high purity and high yield. CONSTITUTION:2,6-Xylenol is allowed to react with a sulfonating agent according to a known method to obtain bis(3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)sulfone wherein a by-product, 3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenylsulfonic acid is recovered in the form of a 2,6-xylenol solution and the recovered solution is not added to the complicated operations such ad distillation, but fed again to the next reaction. USE:The product is used as a starting material of heat-resistant and hydrolysis- resistant plastics such as polyester, epoxy and polycarbonate.
