PURPOSE:To discriminate the positions and presence/absence of symbols remaining as the black areas at a high speed and in a large quantity, by applying the expansion processing, the contraction processing and thin line elimination processing to the connection lines and symbols in a connection diagram. CONSTITUTION:A black area enclosed by contours 5a and 5b reads a connection diagram containing a connection line 6 and a square symbol 7 through a pattern reading means 1 and supplies it to a symbol deciding means 2 to perform the expansion processing to expand a black area 8 in all directions. Then the contraction processing is carried out until the thinnest black area part 8a is equal to the 1-dot width. Then a line art 9 of the 1-dot width is deleted out of a pattern where the part 9 and a symbol part 10 of a large width. Thus only the part 10 remains and the presence of a symbol can be decided. The result of decision is stored in a memory 3 and the symbol is read out as necessary for the plotting purpose of the connection diagram.
