HERBICIDAL SULFONAMIDES

Compounds of the general formula wherein J is selected from certain carbocyclic and heterocyclic aryl groups, or is a 2-alkoxycarbonylbenzyl group; R is H or CH3; A is a substituted 2-pyridyl or 4-pyrimidyl group; and their agriculturally suitable salts, exhibit potent herbicidal activity. Some also have plant growth regulant activity. The compounds may be formulated into herbicidal compositions in conventional manner. They may be prepared by reacting an appropriate arlysulfonyl isocyanate with an appropriately substituted 2-aminopyridine or 4- aminopyrimidine.
