In the circuit for preprocessing external data for microprocessors, between the data store (2) and the microprocessor (1) there is arranged a data preprocessing means (5), which is designed for a sequential execution of individual-bit instructions and multi-bit instructions. It has on the one hand a circuit which selects items of data information the width of one bit and offers them to the microprocessor for logical combination, and on the other hand a circuit which writes the result of the logical combination by the microprocessor (1) in the corresponding bit address of a data word the width of more than one bit, to write the amended data word back into the data store (2) or make it available to the peripherals. This produces a considerable reduction in the execution time, and a flexible handling suitability of the bytes or words both in the read operation and in the write operation is achieved by simple means. <IMAGE>
