PURPOSE:To aim at simplifying the structure of a tiltable steering mechanism, by laying a column change rod in parallel with and along one side of a steering shaft such that it is possible to prevent the steering shaft and the column change gear from being displaced relative to each other during tilt manipulation. CONSTITUTION:A steering shaft 1 is composed of upper and lower shafts 2, 3 which are coupled with each other through the intermediary of a universal joint 4. An upper shaft 2 is rotatably supported in an upper steering column 7 which is tiltable about the center of the universal joint 4 or the rotary axis 8 passing through the tilt center. A column change rod 10 for carrying out the gear shift operation of an automatic speed change gear is arranged in parallel with and along one side of the above-mentioned shaft 1. The rod 10 is also divided into upper and lower sections which are coupled with each other by means of a universal joint 14 having its center positioned on the horizontal line A passing through the tilt center. Further, an energy absorbing means S for relieving thrust-up force is provided to the lower rod 13. |
