PURPOSE:To enable a carriage to be constantly moved to a central part of a paper, by providing a printer carriage with a means for detecting the position of the paper, calculating a position corresponding to a central part of the paper based on the detected result, and storing the calculated position. CONSTITUTION:When a first paper is fed to a printing part, a paper sensor part 12 detects the left and right end positions of the paper when a carriage 9 is moved leftward and rightward relative to the paper, and inputs the detection results to a controller 15, which calculates a centering position for the paper inserted, and outputs the calculation results to a centering quantity storing circuit 16. In inserting the second paper, when a signal is supplied from a paper insertion detecting part 13 to the controller 15, centering position data stored in the circuit 16 are read, and are outputted to a carrier-driving circuit 17. The circuit 17 controls the operation of a carrier motor 18 based on a driving control signal, whereby the carriage 9 is moved to an accurate centering position for the paper 11.
