PURPOSE:To exchange an optical signal having high speed with an electric signal without converting the optical signal into the electric signal by providing the first and the second pulse light sources, a controller for controlling a deflecting device disposed in the light sources and a deflecting device disposed in an input light highway. CONSTITUTION:An optical pulse 6 is made incident on a non-linear optical substance 1 through a lens 2 from laser 3 and an optical pulse 7 is made incident on the substance 1 from laser 4 after a time tau. Further, from the optical pulse 6, an optical pulse 8 is made incident on the substance 1 from laser 5 after a time T. The optical pulses pass through substantially the same part of the substance 1, a part thereof is absorbed and others are transmitted and are observed as optical pulses 6'-8'. If the time relation of the respective optical pulses satisfies the condition that the time tau is within a time when an electric dipole maintains a phase relation with light in the substance 1 and the time T is within a time when the substance 1 returns from an exciting state to a ground state, an optical echo pulse 9 is discharged from the substance 1 after the time tau from the incidence of the optical pulse 8. |
