A process for producing ethanol which comprises reacting methanol, carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst comprising a cobalt phosphine carbonyl complex having the formula: Co(CO)3.R1R2R3P.R4R5PO wherein each of R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 is independently hydrogen, C1-C20 alkyl, C3-C20 cycloalkyl or aryl, and the alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl may contain a member selected from N, O, S, halogen and mixtures thereof is disclosed. |
