1,189,049. Preparation of aminonitriles. W. R. GRACE & CO. 7 May, 1968 [8 May, 1967], No. 21644/68. Heading C2C. Aminonitriles are prepared by reacting ammonia, a primary or secondary amine, formaldehyde and HCN, or by reacting an ammoniaformaldehyde or amine-formaldehyde condensation product, HCN, and if stoichiometrically required, formaldehyde, in which the reaction is carried out in an aqueous reaction medium containing an acid, at a temperature of 0-130‹ C., under autogenous pressure, and under conditions such that over the whole of the reaction time, there is substantially no net transfer of heat to or from the reaction mixture. These aminonitriles can be readily hydrolysed to form the corresponding amino acids, e.g. by treatment with sodium hydroxide at temperatures of from 10‹ to 100‹ C. The preparation of ethylenediamine tetracetic acid is referred to. |
