A system for writing data into or reading data from an alterable data storage carrier is described as embodied in an article (garment) transport system. A passive (unenergized) data carrier is associated with a particular article carrier and as it is transported into a work station, a sensing means makes contact with the data carrier, energizes it and writes into it or reads from it data relating to the article being carried or relating to the work station at which the sensing means is located. A central processing unit controls the contacting of the sensing means with the data carrier and the entry or retrieval of data therefrom. The data entered into or received from the data carrier may be used to compile statistics relating to the travel of that particular article carrier, relating to the processing status of the article being carried, etc.
