Dense soda ash is produced by the thermal decomposition above 135 DEG C of sodium bicarbonate in an aqueous sodium carbonate slurry and separating ahydrous carbonate from the mother lye. To prevent scaling of the heat providing walls the hydrostatic height above the heating walls should be kept above a certain defined minimum, which at a decomposition temperature of 150 DEG C or higher is preferably at least 10 metres.
