Infusion solns. for parenteral nutrition comprise an aqs. soln. of a higher mol. wt. sugar, pref. contg. =7 or 8-16 sugar units, opt. in hydrogenated form, and opt. in combination with aminoacids, vitamins, electrolytes, monomeric sugars and/or sugar alcohols. The solns. can be more conc. than solns. contg. monomeric sugars, without being hypertonic. The high mol.wt. sugars do not undergo Maillard reaction with amino acids.
