A vertical housing (1) (Figs. 1-3) contains an infra-red lamp (2) at its lower part, and at least one ultra-violet lamp (3) in its upper part; an inlet (4) and outlet (5) are provided at the lower and upper levels of the housing; the housing is constructed to prevent emission of radiation. Baffles may be formed by plates attached to the housing wall to cause the air to zig-zag and thus prolong its period of subjection to radiation. Several apparatus can be connected in series.
<??>In another embodiment (Figs. 4-5) an infrared or fluorescent lamp is screened against UV emission except where light is emitted against a non-reflecting portion of the support.
<??>In use, air is convected or drawn forcedly to be subjected to ultra-violet radiation which kills germs and degrades suspended particles.
