PURPOSE:To rapidly recognize a pattern and to perform its evaluation in a short time by comparing a video signal obtained from a TV camera and a threshold level set in plural steps and storing the obtained video data every frame and recognizing the pattern from the video data and the threshold level. CONSTITUTION:An image is picked up by a TV camera 4, a switch 16 is closed to a contact (b) side and a video of a pattern 2 is projected on a TV receiver 14 and a focal point is set on a display pattern 2. Then, the switch 16 is closed to a contact (a) side, a composite video signal of the pattern 2 is applied to a video signal processing circuit 18 to separate into a vertical synchronous signal VV, a horizontal synchronous signal VH, an video signal VD, compared with comparison levels Va-Vd in comparators 20a-20d and a specific bright ness level is considered to the video signal having the brightness level exceeding a threshold level. Then, in a synchronizing part 22, after the respective synchro nous signals VH, VV are inserted, they are stored every frame in V-RAM 28a-28d.
