In order to avoid the occurrence of intermodulation products and the loss of vertical resolution during the transmission of the components of a colour television signal, it is provided that a wide-band luminance signal is transmitted in each line during a first field and a narrow-band luminance signal is transmitted in each line during the following second field and the colour difference signals are added in time- or frequency-division multiplex.
