<p>The antibiotic pyracrimycin A (I), assigned the formula: and having m.pt. = 215-216 degrees C, mol. wt. 138.17, UV absorption at 235 m mu (Epsilon = 22,000) in MeOH, characteristic IR, NMR and mass spectra, and contg. 60.99% C, 7.50% H and 20.20% N, is active against Gram-positive and -negative bacteria and produces no resistant strains. The ring-hydrogenated deriv. (II) also has antimicrobial activity. (I) may be produced by submerged aerobic culture of Streptomyces ticinensis n. sp. (ATCC 21619) in an aq. nutrient medium contg. N- and C-sources and inorg. salts, pref. for 20-120hrs. at 20-45 degrees C. (II) may be prepd. by reacting (I) with metal borohydride in a lower alkanol at 0-30 degrees for 2-18 hrs.</p> |
