Drum washing or drying machine rotating in both directions by virtue of an electric motor 11, 17. The periods of rotation in each direction and the period of stoppage of the motor are set by a device which comprises a control circuit 14, in particular a microprocessor, providing signals, on the one hand, to an inverter 15, 18 whose state determines the direction of rotation and, on the other hand, to a controlled switch such as a triac 12 controlling the supply of the motor. The control circuit actuates, according to a predetermined sequence, the inverter and the controlled switch when a switch 21 of an electromechanical programming unit is in a given state. <IMAGE>
