In a differential with a differential brake, the first gears (16, 17) mounted in the case (1) are designed as helically toothed spur gears, while the second gears (10, 11), which interact with the first gears and are connected to the drive shafts (7, 9), are designed as crown wheels with spur toothing. Arranged between the two first gears (16, 17), in the space enclosed by the second gears (10, 11) and the first gears (16, 17), is a differential brake, the braking elements (22, 23) of which, which are connected firmly in terms of rotation to the differential gears (16, 17), are pressed against one another whenever the transmission of different torques to the drive shafts (7, 9) via the helical toothing causes the transmission to the first gears (16, 17) of axial forces with a tendency either to push the first gears apart or towards one another. A helical compression spring (27) brings about the transmission of a predetermined initial torque to one of the drive shafts even when there is no torque being applied to the other drive shaft. <IMAGE>
