This is used, during the harvesting of materials by means of combine harvesters or the like, in order to sever these in the outer vertical end planes between material left standing and material to be mown. So that, during the harvesting of those materials of which the grains tend to fall out to a particularly great extent as a result of minor jolting influences, bumping and the like, as is the case with rape, there are arranged on the severance-cutting unit 1, in order to avoid the threshing effect, at least two severing discs 2 which are located approximately one above the other and are operated at a high circumferential speed and which have relatively small diameters 3 and have a small material thickness, a narrow design being provided and the drive motor 4 being located above the cutting height 5. <IMAGE>
