In order to provide a device for closing off building openings, in particular manholes, gulleys or the like, with the aid of which the penetration of water in the event of storms of floodings is to be prevented to the greatest possible extent in a very simple and unproblematic manner, in particular without changing the structural body or the building openings, the invention proposes at least one tensioning device (2) having two coaxially arranged tensioning rods (e.g. 3) which can be adjusted axially in opposite directions and exhibit or form supporting plates (4) at their ends which are directed away from the tensioning device (2), said tensioning device (2) exhibiting a plurality of threaded bores (5) which are aligned transversely with respect to the adjusting direction of the tensioning rods (e.g. 3). The invention further proposes a panel (6) which is adapted to the opening to be sealed and through which there passes at least one screw (7) which can be screwed into one of the threaded bores (5), the panel (6) being additionally covered, at least in its opening edge abutment region, by a peripheral seal. <IMAGE>
