The invention proceeds from a hydraulic brake system, especially for motor vehicles, with a hydraulic booster 2 and a master cylinder, actuatable by the booster 2, with at least one working chamber 19, brake actuating elements 20 being connected to the working chamber 19, and with a device for limiting the travel of a brake pedal 16, which comprises a first valve 11 and a second valve 12, which connect a housing annular chamber 7 of the hydraulic booster 2 to a compensating reservoir 17 at zero pressure or a pressure chamber 5 or hydraulically shut off this housing annular chamber 7. In order to simplify the unit and ensure its functioning by simpler means it is proposed that the first valve 11 be a travel-controlled 2/2-way valve, which can be actuated by means of an actuating lever 4 of the hydraulic booster 2. <IMAGE>
