The invention relates to a ball of hemp, flax or the like and to the process and to the apparatus for producing it. The ball consists of a fibre string in the form of an essentially twist-free drawing-frame sliver which is wound to form a ball, cup or bobbin. In this drawing-frame sliver, the fibres lie in the stretched position and loosely connected to one another and can be extracted in any length individually or in tufts of any size. The ball (1) is held in a shrink foil (3) open on one side and is drawn off from inside. In order to prevent the drawing-frame sliver from tearing during the feed on the ball-making machine, it is guided on its circumference with slight pressure and low friction. For this purpose, provision is made for guiding the drawing-frame sliver through a low-friction tube made of polyamide or the like. <IMAGE>
