Title compd. is prepd. from corresp. nitrile and sulphuric acid. Thus, MeSCH2CH2CH(OH)CN is hydrolyzed with 50-70% H2SO4 to obtain an aq. soln. contg. MeSCH2CH2CH(OH)CONH2, which is further hydrolyzed with 30-50 wt.% H2SO4 to give MeSCH2CH2CH(OH)CO2H(I). (I) is extracted with a water-immiscible organic solvent from the hydrolysate and isolated from the extract.(I) has lighter color, less odor, lower viscosity and better thermal stability, compared with (I) prepd. by std. methods. (I) is useful as a methionine substitute in animal feeds. |
