Process for irradiating disposable medical objects and foodstuffs with gamma or X rays to destroy microorganisms and noxious insects. A more uniform radiation dose and better use of the rays is obtained by arranging the item (5) of a transport unit to be irradiated in such a way as to obtain at the center (6) a region of lower density than the peripheral region. The transport unit must be irradiated on at least two sides by a source of radiation (1).
