A wet/dry cannister-type vacuum cleaner (51) is provided with a plastic grid unit (30) that includes a spherical cup-like main section (35), an upper annular mounting lip (32), a short tubular support (34) disposed within the main section (35) with the lower end of the support (34) surrounding a central inlet opening (33) in the latter, and a grid (36) extending across the support at the top thereof and disposed below the mounting lip (32). The lower end of the support (34) constitutes a seat (37) for a floating ball valve element (16). An axially extending slot (38) in the support (34) provides a drain for liquid that may be accumulated by the main section (35) at the interior thereof.
