<p>1394963 Surface-treated glass TRANSGLAS PATENTUND LIZENZVERWERTUNGS AG 30 Aug 1973 [30 Aug 1972] 40959/73 Heading C1M A process for surface-treating glass (e.g. by colouring) comprises causing a solution of at least one metal compound in a substantially anhydrous solvent, and suspended in a carrier gas (e.g. as an aerosol), to impinge, at at least 3 atmospheres excess pressure, and in an oxygencontaining atmosphere, upon the surface of not yet solidified glass, a metal oxide layer forming on the glass and at least partially diffusing into the glass surface. The carrier gas may be oxygen-free (e.g. an inert gas). The glass may be a soda-lime-silica glass in continuous ribbon form. Preferably a total of less than 0À05 ml./ cm<SP>2</SP>. (of surface) of solution is applied. The solution may be prepared at a temperature which is at most 30‹ C. below its boiling point and at least 10‹ C. above the temperature at which crystals begin to form. This solution may be admixed with pressurized gas and applied (at, e.g. 3-8 atmospheres excess pressure) to the ribbon through a jet, which may be at an angle of 105-112 degrees to the glass surface moving away from the jet. The metal compound(s) may be metal oxides, metal salts or organo-metallic compounds (e.g. manganous or chromic acetates), and the metal of the compound may be Mn, Fe, Cr, Mo, Co, V or W. The solvent may be a carboxylic acid (e.g. formic, acetic, propionic or butyric acids) or hydroxy-compound (e.g. butanol, phenol or naphthol).</p> |
