1431113 Selectively shielding during electroplating BUCKBEE-MEARS CO 29 Oct 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 50250/73 Heading C7B A shield for selectively masking off regions on an article 16 having irregular surfaces to be selectively plated comprises: front plate 11 having a set of openings 12, 13 therein; backing plate 15 with resilient sheet 14 (having no openings therein) for supporting the article to be selectively plated, e.g. a set of integrated circuit lead frames with gold, or a flexible printing belt with chromium; means for holding the front and backing plates 11, 15 in alignment, e.g. a hinge (51), Fig. 4 (not shown) fastened thereto, so that the article can be positioned between front plate 11 and resilient sheet 14; and further means for uniformly compressing the resilient sheet against the article, e.g. an inflatable air bag 17 to mask off regions of the article from electrolyte. A conforming resilient sheet 10 may be located adjacent and behind front plate 11. Nozzles 23, 24 may be located in front of openings 12, 13 to direct the plating fluid, preferably agitated to uniformly plate the exposed areas of the article. The resilient sheets may be of silicone rubber; the plates may be of epoxy fibre glass laminate or PVC. |
