The present invention is concerned with resistance spot-welding tongs for industrial robots. The starting movement commencing together with the working stroke in resistance spot-welding operations has hitherto changed the application force of the electrodes as a function of its direction in relation to the gravitational force. This uncontrolled application force has often led to a plastic deformation of the metal sheets to be welded together. This is prevented, according to the invention, in that the common centre of gravity of the mass to be accelerated during the starting movement remains at rest. The application forces can then be co-ordinated with great accuracy by means of springs or a cylinder/piston unit, so that plastic deformation of the spot-welded flanges no longer occurs.
