What is proposed is an automatic selector which is designed for dispensing products or services against payment by means of value units stored on a value card or by means of cash and for the acquisition of value units by means of cash. The acquisition of value units takes place in that, in the first place, the completely or partially cancelled value card (14) is inserted into an introduction slot (13) of the automatic selector (10), cash, that is to say preferably coins (18), is then inserted into an insertion slot (15), and a charging key (25) is actuated. A value-unit reading and writing device (33) recharges, on the value card, value units which correspond to the value of the inserted coins. <IMAGE>
