Nitrogen oxides are removed from flue gases from fuel burning plants and nitric acid production plants by means of a catalyst comprising a support and a catalytically active material. The catalytically active material is an ultrastable zeolite Y which has been ion-exchanged with rare earth metals and/or has been combined with vanadium pentoxide. The exhaust gases are conducted in contact with the catalyst at a temperature of 275-400 DEG C at a gas hourly space velocity of at last 7500 h<-1>.
