PURPOSE:To produce a quartz glass added with an additive at a high concentration, easily, by exposing a porous glass material to a gaseous atmosphere containing an additive under high temperature and pressure condition while irradiating the material with a radiation beam for heating. CONSTITUTION:A furnace 1 pressurizable to >=1atm and heatable at a high temperature is packed with a heat-insulation material 2. A porous glass material 4 is placed at a position enclosed with the heater 3 placed in the space enclosed with the heat-insulation material 2. The glass material 4 is heated by electrifying the heater 3 and, at the same time, an atmosphere gas containing an additive such as F, N, Ne, Ar, Xe, Kr, Nd, etc., is introduced through the valve 9 and the gas inlet port 10 into the furnace 1 to keep the pressure in the furnace 1 to 1-8atm. The heating light beam 7 having an intensity of 10-500w/cm<2> and emitted from the light-beam projector 6 is reflected with the mirror 8 and introduced through the transmission window 5 into the furnace 1. The glass 4 is heated with the beam and sintered to a transparent glass. |
