METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING SHEET WIDTH

PURPOSE:To produce a high-accuracy product having extremely high dimensional accuracy of the sheet width by providing a vertical rolling mill between stands and adjusting the gap of vertical rolls in accordance with the signal from a strip width detector. CONSTITUTION:The vertical rolling mill 5 is disposed between horizontal rolling mills 1 and 2 and is provided with the right and left vertical rolls 7 of which the gap is made adjustable by hydraulic cylinders 6. A position detector 8 for the transverse ends of the strip is disposed on the upper stream of the rolling mill 5 and the detection signal thereof is outputted to a width calculating device 9. The device 9 compares the width w1 of a rolling material 4 and a reference width w10 and calculates a gap change rate DELTAS to correct the deviation therebetween.A servocontrol valve 13 is commanded via a position control calculator 12 is accordance with the change rate DELTAS, by which the gap of the vertical rolls 7 is adjusted. The product having the extremely high width accuracy is thus obtd.
