A machine running at a constant speed is passed over the rails which have just been laid, the said machine carrying at least one screwing head, feelers and automatic control means. The fastener 3 is centred by means of a die 7 forming a double bearing-piece, interacting with two adjacent edges of the fastener 3, the said die 7 being controlled by an automatic control system based on the position of the fasteners to be tightened with respect to the machine, the said position being determined by the feelers. <IMAGE>
