PURPOSE:To carry out the sufficient oxidization of a solution of ferrous sulfate, by packing a bacterium-carrier in the middle of a reactor in fixed state, attaching iron- oxidizing bacteria to the carrier in a state immersed in water and circulating the solution of ferrous sulfate in the reactor through the packed layer. CONSTITUTION:A pair of perforated plates 4a and 4b are placed near the top and the bottom of a vertical cylindrical vessel 1, and a packed layer carrying iron-oxidizing bacteria is formed in the middle of the vessel 1. An air-lift tube 2 opened at the top and bottom and extending through both perforated plates is fixed at the center of the vessel. The space above the upper perforated plate is divided into plural chambers with the liquid separation plates 6 attached radially to the outside wall of the protruded tube 2 directing toward the inner wall of the vessel. A tube 9 to supply a solution containing ferrous sulfate is inserted into a part of the above chambers and a part of other chamber is furnished with an overflow port 7 to discharge the solution from the vessel. A compressed air-blasting tube 8 is opened at the lower end or middle part of the tube 2. The solution containing ferrous sulfate can be oxidized sufficiently by this apparatus.
