For sealing, in particular, a melting furnace for metals and metal alloys, wherein the interior is subject to a positive pressure or reduced pressure, it is possible, for restricting the pressurised region to the crucible (5) of the furnace, to provide a high-temperature seal (4) which consists of an impregnated ceramic fibre cord. For impregnating, a chemical compound is used which is water-soluble, thoroughly wets the ceramic fibre cord and is pasty or viscous at the operating temperature of the high-temperature seal (4). <IMAGE>
