Novel and improved simple process for producing 4-biphenylylacetic acid or its salt useful as an antiinflammatory and analgesic agent. The process starts from 4-biphenylylaldehyde und goes through a compond of the formula <CHEM> or <CHEM> wherein R represents a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl or lower alkyl group, R<1> represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a carboxy-lower alkyl group, X represents an oxygen or sulfur atom and Y represents a sulfur atom or -NH-.
