Electromagnetic, optical, sound, microwave radiation is emitted from the work unit 3 in the direction of the closest rail 6 of the adjacent track 2; the intensity of the reflected echoes is measured in order to detect the maximum intensity echo, which is emitted by the said rail 6; the distance d1 separating the source of this echo from the emitter 8 is calculated, the result obtained is compared with the set theoretical distance D between the adjacent rails 5 and 6 of two parallel tracks 1 and 2 and the result of the comparison is used to control the guiding of the unit 3 so as to maintain or reestablish this distance and/or in order to emit an alarm signal in the case of a separation which exceeds the permitted tolerance. <IMAGE>
